Dissociation is a mental process where a person experiences a temporary separation from their thoughts, actions, surroundings, or memories. I created this explainer video to describe and visualize the process to an audience who may be uninformed. The process of creating this animation included research, script writing, storyboarding, animatics, look and feels, character rigging, and animation.
Dissociation is a far-reaching phenomena but it remains as a difficult experience to put exactly into words. Those who experience dissociation may feel confused or worried due to lacking any prior knowledge.
To successfully inform my audience of the mental process known as dissociation through visual and narrative storytelling.
The first step in my process was to conduct research on the topic and audience I was targeting. I took the information I learnt and transformed it into a presentation—breaking down the target audience, the language and tone needed to reach that audience, the emotions this subject matter may evoke, and what visual strategy would resonate best.
My next step was to develop a script that describes the sequence as it would unfold. With my animation having a voice-over, it was important to write out the script being read by the narrator in unison with descriptions of images to be displayed on the screen. The script also helped in giving potential visual metaphors to be used in the animation.
A storyboard was made that maps out the entire narrative of the video. The storyboard helped in organizing thoughts while also identifying potential issues with the visual narrative. Sound effects, voice-overs, and actions were specified as well to help give context.
I developed an animatic to give a clear indication of pace and sequence of the animation, as well as to test how well the voice-over matches the animation.
Using feedback from my presentation, storyboard, and animatic, I developed a look and feel to get a better idea of my design aesthetic. This helped in showcasing the importance of color in the animation as well as the focus on an individual character.
Working on the final animation was quite time-consuming but was completely worth the effort put in. Character rigging was completely new to me but once I polished my understanding of the DUIK Basel the tool became seamless. Both the research and execution for this project were eye-opening experiences that gave insight I never anticipated.
